Chelsea v Stoke City: Who should be in the starting line-up?
As Chelsea’s pre-season preparations heat up, the squad is set to be unveiled.
A few players will not be in action during pre-game warm-ups as they will be travelling to Stoke City for the Capital One Cup first leg on Thursday, but there are a few notable names that should be at Stamford Bridge for a few weeks.
Here is a full list of players that should not be involved in the squad on Wednesday.
James Tomkins The England Under-21 international, who has just signed a new contract with the Blues, will not start the game.
James McClean The centre-back, who was a key figure in the club’s success last season, is not in the XI.
Adam Lallana Lallana, who is one of the Blues best players, will also be absent.
Nathan Ake The midfielder, who started the campaign on loan at Southampton, has not featured in the Blues first two matches.
This will be the second consecutive game he will not feature, after he had a scan on his knee on Wednesday and was unable to go through with his pre-match routine.
If Ake is not available, it is possible the Blues could opt to bring in a goalkeeper.
Kensington Park will host another Premier League game on Thursday.
James Ward-Prowse The striker is unlikely to feature for Chelsea as he is on international duty.
It is a surprise that he will be missing out as he has started the first two games of the season.
He will not appear for the Blues in their Premier League clash with Southampton on Wednesday evening.
A defender in a 4-4-2 formation would make sense for him, but it will be difficult to find someone who can do the job with the lack of quality at the position.
Chelsea will be looking to turn their fortunes around on Wednesday night.
They will be hoping to build on their excellent start to the season with a win and keep pace with the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal.
